5 PEAKS CHALLENGE. MAY 4TH 2013
This year sees me hitting the ripe old age of “50”! To celebrate you may have thought I would have a party? Relax, chill out, enjoy a bit of the high lifeJ?
Luckily you know me better than that. As with previous years I’m setting myself up with a challenge that will cause many to question my sanity!
I intend to run up 5 mountains; starting with Ben Nevis, Scotland finishing with Snowdon, Wales. The other 3 mountains are Scaffel Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw in the Lake District. I will be cycling the 500 miles between these mountains and hopefully completing the challenge in 5 days!
Why? Firstly, I am fit and healthy so the opportunity to raise some funds for a local cause that is close to my heart was always going to drive me on. Alex Wood, a highly active 33-yr-old husband and father-of-four, suffered a tragic head injury on 4 October 2011. This year I am supporting “Making Waves for Alex”.
Secondly, I am applying the “Can do” rather than the “Can’t do” approach!
IF YOU DON’T GIVE IT A GO HOW WILL YOU EVER KNOW?

Well just in case there was any doubt today I cracked Peak no.5 of the 5 Peaks Challenge!!! It was ridiculously hard the bike ride included climbing of over 5000ft before climbing Snowdon. My body has now pretty much shut down feeling numb and weary all over. This alone deserves a donation ? X A massive thank-you to those who have sponsored already I really do appreciate it as does Alex xx

WELL DONE NIGEL AND THANK YOU!!!!!!

Alex has been coming home every weekend now since February. he stays Friday till Monday and loves every minute he is home.

One of his carers commented that Alex with his family is ‘Ten times the Alex he is without them’.

Alex continues to make progress, although it is slow. His memory seems to be improving a little, able to retain things a bit longer before forgetting them. He is more aware of his surroundings and is at peace when he is home.

His speech is sometimes very clear, and his sentences are improving, he is also asking questions and showing an interest in things rather than accepting everything, he can ask relevant questions about it, which is hugely encouraging as it shows his brain is taking in the information, processing it and evaluating it verbally. Incredible!

Looking back over the past nearly 18 months, it is abundantly clear the progress Alex has made.

Diet-Alex is now coping with a ‘soft’ diet and thickened fluids.

In Speech Therapy the Therapist is extremely confident Alex has great potential, through the money raised by all, Alex receives extra Speech and Language Therapy twice a week now. Although his speech is severely slurred, incomprehensible often, occasionally he speaks quite clearly.

In Physiotherapy Alex continues to be stretched and pushed! Left arm now has very slight movement in the shoulder and a bit in the elbow, this is huge progress. Astoundingly he can sit up cross legged unaided for several minutes. He gains core strength and confidence gradually.

Alex now returns home from Friday through to Monday, for home cooked meals, family time, cuddles, and family walks. Although this is a very big adaptation process, Alex is a different person at home and full of energy and life.

Tamsyn set up a campaign #GetAlexHome to try and raise awareness about the fact the council (South Oxfordshire District Council) have no appropriate housing for them. Neither does it look like they will be rehoused in the future due to a shortage of housing and funds.

The situation is desperate and Alex needs to be at home with his wife and children. His progress hinges on it and time is running out.

We will keep you up to date with any progress on this, but both thoughts and prayers would be welcomed by the family at this very difficult uncertain time.

At the end of last week (January 15th) Tamsyn had some incredible news- Alex may finally stay at home every weekend! He will stay two nights and three days, making the distance between them far easier to manage with a welcome break commuting 2 hours a day to visit him every day for Tamsyn.

Alex is absolutely delighted and Tamsyn describes herself as ‘extremely overwhelmed, BLISS!’ At the thought of having her husband home every weekend.

Alex (still in need of 24/7 care) will need this in the home, so it will be a big adjustment for everyone, especially as his bed is in the Dining room meaning the house will be very cramped with 3 adults and 4 children in it! This doesn’t phase Tamsyn however, who is just thrilled to finally get him home for a while, even if she does have to cook for the carer too!

Tamsyn feels very strongly that Alex will not progress very much further untill he is home, his environment being a familiar, normal one, with his family. He is completely different in the home, although the family are awaitingstill rehousing.

He is doing well in physio and a new private Speech Therapist (funded by money you lot have raised!) will be going in on a weekly basis too to top up the Speech and Language Therapy.

Well the end of this year has seen the most amazing event yet, Alex was able to spend Christmas night in his own home with his wife and 4 thrilled kids! It was his first overnight stay and tamsyn is wife Tamsyn: “it could not have gone better, it was the most magical Christmas. Alex had a smile on his face that stayed the whole 48 hours he was home” Tamsyn is still trying to find a house for the family to live together, as this is now what alex needs. He needs to be around his family. This is proving one tough battle as the council keep repeating the fact that there are no homes that woulbe meet their requirements. A miracle is needed.

There is not much to report otherwise in recovery, speech is sometimes clear, but very difficult to understand often. Physically there is nothing to report, no advancements, it seems improvements have stagnated somewhat. Tamsyn hopes when he is at home the stimulation will help on all counts.

Alex has moved!!! To Chalfont Lodge, Amersham, a nursing home. It went well, the staff are really friendly and so far he seems really settled there. The kids and I spent most of the day and had dinner in the restaurant with him, so it was almost as though we had got to go out to dinner all together! It was a fantastic day, and the kids have never been so happy hanging out, the environment’s brilliant for them. He asks to come home with me everytime I am there, I am still hoping for a house so I can bring him home and we can start a new family life altogether again. Next week I am starting to take him once-a-week to Hydrotherapy, which I am able to do thanks to all the money raising efforts. BIG news is that I have the go-ahead for overnight stays!!! Quite a few logistics to be addressed, but this should be happening once a week, maybe even as soon as next week!! This is SO exciting for all of us! Thank you to everyone for your continued support and fundraising efforts. It really makes SUCH a difference. x

Home visits are now a regular event on a Friday for Alex. The children were on half term so the family enjoyed lunch together around a table for the first time altogether for 13 months! When asked what he fancied for pudding he said ‘same again’! He was shattered on returning to the Centre, maybe because-when their transport had been canceled with no one knowing why- Tamsyn asked to take her home in her car instead. He transferred beautifully into the car and went for his first journey sitting in a car seat! These are all things that Tamsyn believes will fully stimulate him and encourage more improvement and progress when he is able to move home.
